One interesting thing that I’ve learned over the past few years is that if you want to get people to buy your stuff, you need to sell to them in a way that YOU enjoy being sold to in.
It’s not necessarily about selling MORE (although I do believe selling daily should be a non-freakin’-negotiable), it’s about selling in the way that will actually lead to sales.
Have you ever asked yourself why YOU buy things?
Have you really taken a good look at the reason(s) you hire people?
This is some truly eye-opening shit, I tell ya!
Just this morning I went through this exercise and I realized that the way I buy is NOT how people teach me to sell.
Interesting.
If you look at the way most internet marketers and coaches are teaching you to sell, it usually looks a little bit like this:
- Create tons of free content; ideally step-by-step strategies that people can replicate.
- Share this content on social media, and turn some of it into free opt-ins you can blast all over with Facebook ads.
- Host challenges, run webinars, and don’t forget to make daily livestreams a priority. People NEED to see and hear you before they buy!
- When it’s time to sell (usually after a few weeks of giving away all of your best stuff), make sure you plan a big launch. Don’t forget about your Facebook ads. Re-targeting ads are key. They are a NECESSITY!
- Create a sales funnel that will give people content, then content, then content, and then BOOM! SURPRISE! Here’s my $27 product that you can buy.. and then my $97 product.. and then my $397 product.. and then you can hire me 1:1 and pay $5,000, okay?
This is SO out-dated.
This kind of stuff may have worked a few years ago, but today, it’s an absolute waste of time. Trust me, I’ve done it.
I spent the majority of 2018 trying to get my shit together because I was somehow convinced that I needed to in order to be a “respectable” entrepreneur (LOL!).
I thought that in order for me to make the millions I desire to make, I needed to act like a millionaire, and OF COURSE a millionaire would have their shit together, right?
Turns out, that’s not always the case. Many millionaires (and multi-millionaires) that I know closely, are chaotic AF and don’t have any of their shit together. In fact, I probably have more of my shit together than they do!
I also know millionaires that are VERY organized, plan every single thing, have big, huge launches a few times per year, and are constantly bitching and moaning about how tired they are.
(One time I saw a very well-known coach talk about how she had to “get ready” for her 13 client calls that she was doing that ONE day, and complaining TO HER OWN FOLLOWING to “ugh, shoot me”.
And then at the end of the day she excitedly posted on Instagram that her “day from hell” was over.)
I’ve found that the times I’ve made the most money (my first $500,000 year, and my $80,000 MONTH) were the times when I had no sense of organization going on at all.
I was throwing random shit at the internet to see what would stick.
I was investing tons of money in random things & people to see what would resonate most.
I was testing all kinds of different strategies to see what would feel best AND get the best growth and money results.
And the times I tried to organize my life?
Were the times my income would dip - massively.
Crazy. But also so totally OBVIOUS.
Of course things work when you’re not trying to force them to. Of course things work when you’re just “going with the flow” and not trying to make things happen in a super specific way.
Of course!
This morning I journaled on the perfect sales “strategy” according to me. How I personally buy from others.
This is what came up; maybe it’s the same for you:
- Find someone on either Facebook or Instagram, either by them following me, or me just randomly stumbling across their profile. Follow them.
- Consume practically ALL of their content over the course of a few months, to the point where I feel as though we’re best friends, as I know SO much about them.
- See them talk about some kind of offer. Buy it. (It’s usually around the low-mid range price point.)
- Consume paid content. If I find it valuable, I keep following them, and shortly after, will often invest in 1:1 mentorship, if they offer it. (I do sometimes purchase high-end, such as 1:1, straight away, if I feel called to.)
- Continue working with/buying from until it no longer feels aligned (if ever!).
I absolutely DO NOT find new people through Facebook ads. I do not BUY from Facebook ads. I ignore ads and am annoyed by them.
I never watch livestreams or videos. If all you have is video/live content, I will likely never be a buyer. I’m a fast reader and prefer to read content instead of watch/listen to it. (Which is probably why I never got into listening to podcasts.)
I must have a deep sense of connection and feeling of “I want that kind of life” before I will buy from you.
I must be made to feel as though I’m important and that I am not just another dollar (if I purchase from you - especially something high-end - and then never hear from you again after that initial purchase, I will never buy from you again, and will tell people about my experience in that regard).
I buy from people who consistently follow up with/check in on me. <— Big one.
How do YOU buy from people?
What is your own personal buying process like?
Odds are, it’s how your soulmate clients & students buy, too. There’s your marketing/sales plan. You’re welcome.
The perfect business model is not the one that is perfectly perfect. It’s not the one where you have a list for your list and have every single task mapped out in Google calendar.
What the perfect business model IS, is the one where a business model isn’t even necessary.
My perfect “business model” looks like this:
- Journal or meditate to clear my head & receive guidance.
- Write a post/email (often around whatever came up during journaling/meditation) and share on social media.
- Share other content (mostly behind-the-scenes and random thoughts/opinions) throughout the day, also on social media.
- Add a call-to-action on the end of at least one of my social media posts every day. Sell whatever I’m selling.
- Ocassionally shoot videos/do livestreams when the mood strikes.
That’s it. The end. That’s my 2019 marketing plan.
JUST FUCKING SHOW UP.
Show up, say something, sell something.
Rinse and repeat.
Those 3 things are what consistently make me the most money. And it feels completely natural and easy (unlike webinars and sales calls.. ugh).
Ask yourself how YOU like to be sold to. That’s what your people want. THAT is how you need to sell to them (if you want to make money, that is).
More work doesn’t always equal more money.
More time doesn’t always equal more accomplishments.
What works is what’s easy. What feels fun and natural.
Identify what that is, actually DO IT, and you’ll be unstoppable!
xx,
Cassie
